|About Me and My Studio|
Deborah is a New York City-based vocalist, songwriter, arranger, and actress. She trained at the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco, CA; studied Lyric Theatre at S.F.S.U.; British American Drama Academy, Oxford, England; and in New York City with Anne Bogart and Richard Edelman. Ms. Latz received her certification in Somatic Voicework™ The LoVetri Method in Levels I, II, and III while attending the Shenandoah Conservatory in Virginia.
For fifteen years Deborah has taught Vocal Expression and Communication at New York City’s, Cooper Union School of Engineering through the Connect Program; Voice Teacher and Coach for the ‘Emerging Artists in Residence’ program for the student’s 2012 Carnegie Hall debut, including jazz vocal workshops in the ‘Homeless Youth Outreach’ program for the NYC non-profit, Art Start.
She has worked in dramatic and musical theater both in the U.S. and abroad. Her theater credits include the off-Broadway comedy 'High Infidelity' and her own self- produced one-woman show, 'Travels With Ma Own Self', which opened in New York and toured in Europe. For her performance in the one-woman drama, 'Juliet', Deborah received the Best Actress Award at the Jerzy Grotowski Theatre Festival in Wrocław, Poland.
On May 5, 2015 Deborah's new album, 'sur l'instant' was released on JMP. 'sur l'instant' was recorded in Paris with two exceptional French musicians, the acclaimed pianist Alain Jean-Marie and the first call bassist Gilled Naturel. This spare yet creatively inspiring setting spotlights Latz’s subtle swing and dramatically alert delivery to its fullest while also displaying the uncommon gifts of her accompanists. In 2013 she released her third CD, 'Fig Tree', a new take on both the Great American Songbook and contemporary jazz. 'Fig Tree' is the latest installment in an impressive collection of recordings—in 2004 Deborah launched her debut CD, 'Toward Love', ten standards that explore the path along the way to love, and in 2008 she released 'Lifeline', a selection of timeless tunes and French chansons enriched by poignant memories and emotions of her childhood.
Latz continues to travel the globe as a performing artist. In addition to performing regularly in New York City, Deborah has recently played in China, France, Canada, and the western U.S. In September 2013 she toured Paris with her third release, FIG TREE, on June Moon Productions.
|Styles:||I work with the student to build a healthy vocal technique for singing jazz, blues, musical theater, professional speaking and many other vocal styles.|
In my studio I concentrate on healthful singing. It is my goal to help the student to find joy, freedom and personal expression in singing and speaking. And to keep the student's unique individuality as a singer and interpreter in the material they are working on.
It is important to understand the who, what, when, where, and why of the material sung and to make it your own.
Teaching is about listening, patience, understanding and a two-way communication with the student. It is exhilarating to be a part of the student's understanding of themselves-their body and voice, and to see them achieve their vocal goals!
Studio locations are in mid-town Manhattan; South Midwood, Brooklyn as well as through Skype. Please call or email for more information and rates.
|Why Somatic Voicework™?|
|Working with the brilliant SVW™ tools to have a clearer understanding of the body, the physiology of what is happening in the voice box and a coherent language to communicate healthy singing and care of the voice and body to the student is monumental!|
