Dr. Laura Kafka-Price

Dr. Laura Kafka-Price is enjoying a multi-dimensional career as a private voice teacher, a French instructor at The Peabody Conservatory, a classical and crossover singer, and as an author and adjudicator. She has taught music since 1981 for more than thirty years at every level from university undergraduates to elementary. Her students have performed on Broadway, in national Broadway tours, film and in a variety of stage productions in addition to singing for pleasure without any professional aspirations. Although Kafka-Price is a classically trained singer who completed the University of Maryland Opera Studio training with Leon Major and where she also studied voice with Louise McClelland Urban, she is Level I certified teacher of the Somatic Voicework (sm) The LoVetri Method. She also holds an Advanced Professional Teaching Certificate in K-12 Music from the Maryland State Department of Education. Her degrees include a PhD in musicology from the University of Maryland, College Park, an MA with a concentration in voice performance from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks where she studied voice with Dr. Suzanne Summerville, a BM in voice performance and a BA in French both from Methodist University in Fayetteville, NC where she studied with Alan Porter, and an AA from Monterey Peninsula Community College in California where she studied voice with Dr. Salvatore Ferrantelli and the late Dr. Harvey Marshall. Her first private voice lessons were with the late Caterina Micieli whom she met through the Lyceum summer music camp at the Carmel Bach Festival in California. In addition to French, Dr. Kafka-Price also speaks Polish fluently.In addition to her private voice students, Dr. Kafka-Price has taught voice at Georgetown University, group voice at The Peabody Preparatory in Baltimore, and she was the vocal/general music teacher at L’Ecole d’Immersion Française Robert Goddard (Robert Goddard French Immersion School) in Prince George’s County where her highly acclaimed children’s chorus, Les Petites Voix, won numerous awards and recognitions. She has also taught non-performance based music classes at the University of Maryland at College Park, Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania, the Baltimore Hebrew University and at Eleanor Roosevelt High School. As a lyric soprano, she has appeared in recital, opera, oratorio and presented lecture-recitals at numerous professional music conferences, both nationally and internationally. She has performed in Carnegie Hall in New York, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Washington, DC, as well as many other public and private engagements. She has received numerous academic and vocal scholarships, awards and honors to support her research efforts to include a Post-Doctoral Fellowship to Poland from the International Research and Exchange Board (IREX). Dr. Kafka-Price maintains her affiliation and active participation with several professional music organizations. She has prepared for publication a collection of French translations of American children’s songs and choral compositions to be used in teaching K-8 General and Vocal music in French. Her current project is introducing the choral music and vocal jazz choir arrangements of Dr. Sal Ferrantelli to the music community.
