Paul Hindemith

Baritone Paul Hindemith, as both singer and teacher, believes music is the ideal medium for putting artist and listener alike in touch with themselves, with humanity, and with the eternal and spiritual.Hailed as "Touching and expressive" by the Washington Times and as "Vocally and theatrically sturdy" by the Baltimore Sun, Paul has stage credits to his name in opera, operetta, and musical theatre. He has performed with the Utah Festival Opera, the Ohio Light Opera, Fargo-Moorhead Opera, Western Plains Opera, Opera in the Ozarks, Opera Vivente (Baltimore), and Theatre Latte Da (Minneapolis), among others. Favorite roles include the four major Mozart baritones (Don Giovanni, The Count in Le nozze di Figaro, Guglielmo in Cosí fan tutte, and Papageno in Die Zauberflöte), the Baker in Into the Woods, and Jud in Oklahoma. He appears as Baron Weps in The Birdseller, on Albany Records.Performing new music is an integral part of Paul's work, and in the summer of 2006, he premiered the winning song cycle of the NATS Art Song Competition, David Cutler's Evenly Spaced Waves of Irony. Paul has appeared on the Basilica of St. Mary (Minneapolis) Chapel Recital Series and on the Mindekirken (Minneapolis) Noon Recital Series, twice with Grieg expert William Halverson. Paul has also appeared as soloist in several oratorios, including the Fauré and Mozart Requiems, Vaughan-Williams's Dona Nobis Pacem, and Bach's Matthäuspassion as Jesus.Paul holds a doctorate from the University of Minnesota and a Master of Music degree in Voice/Opera Performance from the University of Maryland - College Park. He graduated summa cum laude from Southern Methodist University in Dallas with a B.M. in Performance, minors in German, Chemistry, Mathematics, and an Honors citation.Immediately after his time at SMU, Paul taught vocal music at Omaha North High School. He was a clinician at the University of Nebraska at Omaha's Honor Choir Festival in 2002. Paul's voice traveled far beyond the podium during that time -- he programmed and hosted "Sunday Evening Classics" for KVNO, Omaha's Classical Radio Station.Paul served as Interim Professor of Voice at the University of South Dakota where he added the title of director to his résumé with the USD Opera Workshop's production of his new translation of Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel. He taught at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota from 2009 to 2015 and currently serves as coordinator of voice at Georgia College in Milledgeville, Georgia. His academic interests lie in the interconnection of music, text, acting, and teaching, and his doctoral thesis was on the topic of The Singer as Communicator.
