Art Joslin

Baritone Art Joslin is a versatile performer with credits in opera, oratorio, jazz, gospel, studio recording, and commercial music. Recently, Joslin performed the title role in Verdi’s Rigoletto with Illinois Opera, Angelotti in Tosca with Toledo Opera, and Pistola in Falstaff with Amici Opera. He has appeared with the Michigan Opera, Motor City Lyric Opera, Michigan State University Opera, and the University of Michigan. Joslin’s roles have included Melchior in Amahl & the Night Visitors, Don Alphonso in Così fan tutte, Commendatore in Don Giovanni, Antonio in Le nozze di Figaro, and Budd in Albert Herring. Equally at home in Music Theater and commercial music, Dr. Joslin has performed the roles of Professor Bhaer in Little Women, Governor/Innkeeper in Man of La Mancha, Commander Harbison in South Pacific, Father in Children of Eden, and Daddy Warbucks in Annie. Commercial credits include two full-length gospel CD’s, six full-length music video recordings as featured soloist for Ford Motor Company, multiple studio background vocal contracts, and feature performer of the National Anthem at the 2006 Minor-League Baseball World Series at Mudhen Stadium in Toledo, Ohio. Dr. Joslin is an avid vocologist and voice pedagogue having earned the Certificate in Vocology, awarded jointly by the National Center of Voice and Speech and the University of Iowa. Joslin has presented lectures and workshops on a variety of voice science/pedagogy topics including “Care of the Professional Voice” at the Nairobi Conservatoire of Music, Nairobi, Kenya, “Introduction to Formant Tuning” at the University of Illinois School of Music, “The Use of Hyperbaric Oxygen in the Treatment of Voice Disorders” at Indiana University’s New Voice Educators Symposium, and “Teaching the Solo Singer – What Every Choral Director Needs to Know” at the Michigan School Vocal Music Association Summer Choral Workshop. He was recently invited to present a poster session at the 6th International Conference on the Physiology and Acoustics of the Singing Voice in Las Vegas. Dr. Joslin is the 2011 recipient of the National Association of Teachers of Singing National Vocal Pedagogy Award, and a 2010 recipient of a NATS Independent Teacher Fellowship. He is currently a member of the voice faculty of Cornerstone University and Grand Valley State University and previously served as a visiting instructor of voice at the University of Illinois. Dr. Joslin is a Consortium Member and the Education and Outreach Coordinator with the National Center for Voice and Speech in Salt Lake City. Dr. Joslin holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Voice Performance and Literature from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (with a cognate in voice science and pedagogy), the Master of Music in Voice from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, the Certificate in Vocology from NCVS & the University of Iowa, and Level III certification in the LoVetri Somatic Voiceworks™ Method.
