Brooklyn-based singer, composer, and improviser, Sonia Szajnberg (shine-berg), makes music that is soulful, yet sophisticated. Her compositions draw from a diverse blend of influences ranging from jazz and folk traditions, to minimalism and new music. Sonia’s newest projects include The Future Scares Me, an indie- pop collaboration with keyboardist Eli Sundelson, and ReVoice, an eclectic chamber ensemble performing original works for voices. She continues to write music for her own band whose independently released album, Simple Talk, features a collection of favorite songs and original compositions. Sonia has been recognized nationally and internationally as an ASCAP Young Jazz Composer, an ASCAP Next Generation Songwriter, and a participant in the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Residency. She holds dual master’s degrees in jazz performance and music education from Manhattan School of Music and Teachers College, Columbia University and is certified in Levels I-III of Somatic Voicework ™, The LoVetri Method. Sonia has studied with Theo Bleckmann, Dena DeRose, Peter Eldridge, Kate McGarry and Jeanie LoVetri.
